What type of curtains should I have on my front windows?

My front living room window has a window air conditioner in the summer. What type of curtains will provide privacy, but also accomodate a spot for an air conditioner? (Currently there are plastic vertical blinds which are just hideous)

      For the air conditioner if they are full enough it shouldnt be problem good luck.
